John Edem Ecklu is an Environmental Engineering PhD candidate at the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and Resilience, where he focuses on leveraging climate finance to address water insecurity. His current research includes evaluating climate-financed safe water initiatives across East Africa. The Mortenson Center envisions a world where everyone has access to safe water, sanitation, energy, food, shelter and infrastructure.

John earned his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. He subsequently worked for four years as a project engineer at TREND Group, a WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) consultancy firm in Ghana. In this role, he led and supported numerous projects across the country, partnering with local agencies and international organizations such as UNICEF. His work included designing and supervising the construction of sustainable WASH infrastructure for schools in low-income urban areas and providing technical support to rural communities to increase sanitation coverage.

He is passionate about developing innovative, climate-resilient WASH solutions that go beyond infrastructure to achieve lasting impact in low-income regions. Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, John enjoys spending time outdoors and riding his bike.
